Atinuke Ajeniyi | 6th August 2025

The livestock sector in Gombe State is set for a major transformation following the approval to establish an ultra-modern veterinary hospital under the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support (L-PRES) Project.

This strategic initiative, driven by Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, seeks to improve veterinary services, disease surveillance, and livestock productivity in Gombe State and Northern Nigeria.

Malam Sanusi Abubakar, the National Project Coordinator of L-PRES, announced the development during a two-day technical mission to the state.

The high-level federal delegation assessed ongoing livestock interventions and reviewed progress under the project.

According to Malam Abubakar, the hospital will be a diagnosis, treatment, training, and research centre, critical in improving animal health systems and boosting certification processes for livestock products destined for local and international markets.

The facility is to be located within Gombe’s newly established 184-hectare Agro-Livestock Development Zone, which already houses landmark infrastructure, including: an ultramodern abattoir, an International livestock market, a tannery, anda  leather factory,

During the technical mission, the delegation comprising representatives from the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development, L-PRES animal health specialists, and other technical experts visited the proposed site and conducted feasibility assessments.

The National Coordinator expressed satisfaction with the contractor’s preparedness and ongoing work and reaffirmed federal support for livestock initiatives in Gombe.

“This is a pilot project. It has never been done anywhere in the country. Gombe is the first, and we hope the state will serve as a model for other states,” he stated.

Professor Usman Bello Abubakar, Gombe State’s L-PRES Project Coordinator, welcomed the delegation and described the veterinary hospital as a “major milestone” for the state.

He expressed gratitude to the national office for choosing Gombe as the host state and reiterated the government’s commitment to the success of all L-PRES interventions.

The project manager at Lubell Nigeria Ltd, Ms. Asabe, the project’s construction firm, assured us that execution would follow quality standards and contract timelines.
