The Nigerian Senate has introduced a reform agenda to reposition Agricultural Colleges across the country to align with global standards and embrace climate-smart innovations.
This announcement was made during a high-level stakeholder session at the National Assembly in Abuja, convened by the Senate Committee on Agricultural Colleges and Institutions, chaired by Oyo Senator Sharafadeen Abiodun Alli.
Senator Alli remarked that agricultural education is crucial for Nigeria’s food security, economic diversification, and youth empowerment objectives.
He outlined the Committee’s plans, which include legislative reforms, advocacy for increased funding, and fostering international collaborations.
One significant highlight of the session was the announcement that the Senate will lead a delegation of agricultural educators and institutions to the COP30 Climate Conference in Brazil.
The Committee’s technical consultant, Promise Amahah, described this engagement as a historic opportunity to promote Green Colleges and showcase Nigeria’s innovations globally.
“The Senate is not merely legislating; it is taking the lead in global advocacy. At COP30, Nigeria will present innovations from its agricultural institutions and forge alliances to attract investment and facilitate knowledge transfer,” Amahah stated.
Senator Alli also revealed plans to host the inaugural Legislative Summit and Expo on Agricultural Colleges and Institutions in October 2025, followed by a Global Benchmarking Tour in early 2026 to study best practices in Brazil and the EU.
He urged stakeholders to remain committed to this transformation agenda and reiterated the Committee’s openness to partnerships and international exchanges.
