Nigeria has donated 2,000 cashew seedlings and 100,000 cashew seeds to Ethiopia to boost agricultural cooperation and improve food security across Africa.
This substantial contribution, sufficient to cultivate around 600 hectares of farmland, was formally received by Ethiopia’s Minister of State for Agriculture, Dr Efa Muleta Boru, in anticipation of the second United Nations (UN) Food Systems Summit, scheduled to take place in Addis Ababa from July 27 to 29, 2025.
This initiative, part of President Bola Tinubu’s agricultural transformation agenda, exemplifies Nigeria’s commitment to using agro-development as a strategic tool for regional diplomacy and sustainable development.
The donation also reciprocates Ethiopia’s earlier gift of 2,000 Hass Avocado seedlings and 2,000 coffee seedlings to Nigeria in June 2025, further solidifying the partnership between the two nations in promoting climate-smart agriculture and resilient food systems.
Vice President Kashim Shettima is expected to engage in key roundtables and high-level sessions focused on transforming the global coffee value chain and discussions on trade, public finance, and responsible investment to drive sustainable food systems reform.
During a recent pre-summit briefing, the Vice President outlined Nigeria’s three primary objectives: to establish the country as a thought leader in African food systems reform, to forge international partnerships that align with domestic priorities, and to advance a private sector-led model of agricultural transformation across the continent.
