The Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN), Lagos State chapter, has revealed plans to establish poultry sale points across all Local Government Areas (LGAs) in the state to reduce the cost of poultry products by enabling direct-to-consumer sales.
The Chairman of the Lagos chapter, Mr. Mojeed Iyiola, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Lagos.
He said the move is a response to the rising prices of poultry products in the state, which have been affecting both farmers and consumers.
Iyiola explained that the association is collaborating with local government authorities to secure designated spaces where poultry farmers can sell directly to the public.
“We are working with local government authorities to give us spaces in their council areas where we can establish poultry sales points. This will enable us to sell directly to consumers and help reduce costs,” he said.
He noted that high production costs, especially the cost of feed and other inputs, have contributed to the spike in poultry prices.
According to him, eliminating go-betweens from the distribution chain will reduce prices and allow more people to afford protein-rich poultry products.
This initiative also directly benefits smallholder poultry farmers, many of whom struggle to access markets.
By selling directly at LGA sale points, farmers can boost earnings while consumers pay less.
Poultry is one of the most widely consumed animal proteins in Nigerian households. This measure is expected to alleviate food inflation and improve access to affordable protein, particularly in urban and peri-urban communities.
The Lagos chapter of PAN is expected to roll out the first phase of this direct sales strategy in the coming weeks, pending final approval from local government councils.
