Kwara Warns Farmers as NiMet Predicts Rainfall Increase
Oluwaseyi Awokunle | 11th July 2025

The Kwara State Government has issued a precautionary alert to farmers across the state as rainfall intensifies and concerns about flash flooding escalate.

Through the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the government urged crop and fish farmers, especially those operating near rivers, low-lying areas, and flood-prone regions, to take urgent steps to protect their farms and livelihoods.

Although the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) did not include Kwara among the 19 states at high risk of flooding in its July 2025 advisory, officials in the state emphasised that the increasing unpredictability of the weather, combined with intense rainfall patterns, could lead to flash floods capable of causing significant agricultural damage.

The state government expressed concern that such flooding could result in waterlogging, soil erosion, damage to farm infrastructure, and significant loss of crops and livestock if timely measures are not taken.

It also highlighted the potential impact on food supply and rural incomes, reinforcing the urgent need for preparedness.

Farmers were advised to remain alert and take all necessary steps to protect months of hard work on the land and in fish ponds.

The government reassured farmers of its commitment to supporting them through early warnings, responsive policies, and long-term plans to build climate resilience in the agricultural sector.
