Muslim Leaders Demand Government Action On Seasonal Disasters
Olamide Salau | 9th June 2025

The Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI) has called on the Federal Government to take urgent and long-term action to prevent recurring seasonal disasters caused by climate change.

The organisation particularly stressed the need for improved drainage systems, resettlement for flood-prone communities, and stronger environmental protections.

The call follows the recent flooding disaster in Mokwa, Niger State, which submerged homes, destroyed farmlands, and displaced thousands.

The Secretary General of JNI, Professor Khalid Abubakar Aliyu, expressed sympathy with the victims and highlighted the growing danger of climate-induced hazards across Nigeria.

“This calamity, which has submerged homes, farmlands, and critical infrastructure, has rendered thousands homeless, disrupted livelihoods, and claimed precious lives… It is yet another stark reminder of the increasing vulnerability of many communities in our nation to seasonal disasters and climate-induced hazards,” the statement read.

JNI warned that if predictions from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) are accurate, heavier rainfall and more severe thunderstorms may still lie ahead.

The group urged the government to act “deliberately and compassionately,” especially as many homes in flood-hit communities are located on river paths.

In addition to praising the Federal and Niger State Governments for their ongoing relief efforts, JNI called on authorities to prioritise sustainable solutions over short-term emergency responses.

These include building resilient infrastructure, relocating vulnerable households, and enforcing environmental safeguards.

JNI also appealed to the wider Muslim Ummah, Islamic charities, NGOs, and kind-hearted Nigerians to donate food, shelter, and medical supplies to victims.

“Let us respond with hearts of mercy and hands of generosity, for the most beloved of people to Allah is the one who brings benefit to others,” the statement concluded.
