FG Launches Project to Fix Broken Tractors, Boost Farming
Olamide Salau | 8th June 2025

Vice President Kashim Shettima will on Sunday, June 8, 2025, officially launch the National Asset Restoration Programme (NARP) in Maiduguri, starting with a bold plan to restore thousands of broken-down tractors under the NASENI Tractor Recovery Project.

The launch, to be held at the Borno State Agricultural Mechanization (BOSAMAN) Farm Centre, marks a critical step in the Federal Government’s efforts to increase food security and modernize agriculture under its Renewed Hope Agenda.

The National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) is leading the Tractor Recovery Project, in partnership with Machine and Equipment Corporation Africa Limited (MECA).

According to officials, the programme will repair over 55,000 non-functional tractors, many of which have been left idle for years. Currently, only about 7,000 to 10,000 tractors are working across Nigeria.

Each tractor will undergo full mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and structural rehabilitation to ensure it can function efficiently and reliably in the field.

This project will begin in Borno State and later expand nationwide.

Speaking about the initiative, NASENI noted that it is “designed to boost mechanized agriculture, enhance food security, and revitalize rural economies.”

By restoring idle assets, the project is expected to create jobs, improve farming productivity, and reduce Nigeria’s reliance on costly equipment imports.

Vice President Shettima will be joined at the launch by Borno State Governor Professor Babagana Zulum, NASENI’s CEO Mr. Khalil Halilu, and other dignitaries.

NASENI emphasised that this is more than just equipment repair, it is part of a national effort to rebuild Nigeria’s agricultural base using home-grown engineering solutions and to strengthen the country’s resilience.

In the coming months, the National Asset Restoration Programme will expand to include other types of critical infrastructure and machinery across Nigeria to support economic recovery and growth.
