The Zambian Ministry of Agriculture and OCP Africa, a division of OCP Nutricrops, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to work together on a major project that will hasten the country’s agricultural sector’s development. This historic deal ushers in a new age of collaboration aimed at empowering farmers, advancing sustainable practices, and increasing production through creative, regional solutions.

This relationship, which is based on a common goal of modernising agriculture and improving food security, demonstrates OCP Africa’s dedication to collaborating with state institutions to create inclusive agricultural systems.

The agreement lays forth a framework for strategic collaboration by tackling important development areas along the agricultural value chain and utilising Zambia’s potential to become a regional leader in innovation-led farming.

This strategic collaboration aims to empower farmers through a comprehensive capacity-building program. This program will encompass extensive training initiatives to enhance their agricultural knowledge and skills in modern farming techniques, sustainable practices, and efficient resource management.

A key component of this initiative involves detailed soil mapping utilising advanced technologies.

This will enable the creation of customised fertiliser recommendations tailored to the specific nutrient requirements of different soil types and crop varieties within the region. Digital tools will be crucial in this process, providing farmers with accessible and actionable insights. Furthermore, the collaboration will lead to the deployment of a sophisticated Geographic Information System (GIS)-based agricultural platform.

This platform will integrate various data layers, including soil data, weather patterns, crop performance, and market information, to give farmers and agricultural stakeholders valuable insights for improved decision-making.

The platform will support sustainable farming practices by optimising resource allocation, minimising environmental impact, and enhancing agricultural productivity and resilience. Combining capacity building with advanced technological solutions, this holistic approach seeks to create a more efficient, sustainable, and profitable agricultural sector.

Together, these pillars will enable the design of context-specific approaches that respond to Zambian farmers’ unique challenges while fostering resilience, efficiency, and long-term value creation. The project aims to create the foundation for a more sustainable and competitive agricultural sector by supporting knowledge transfer, data-driven solutions, and science-based input customisation.

“This MoU marks a significant milestone in our journey to empower Zambian farmers with the right tools, knowledge, and technologies to thrive,” said Mohamed Hettiti, CEO of OCP Africa.

“We are proud to work alongside the Ministry of Agriculture to co-develop impactful and customised solutions that will benefit farmers and drive inclusive growth.”
