Herders in Ogun State have been given a specific date to register with the state’s Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security.
According to the state government, the registration must be completed by March 31, 2025, via the Ministry’s Department of Veterinary Services.
In a statement made on Tuesday, March 18th, Kehinde Jokotoye, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, said that the registration process is being carried out in collaboration with the Ogun chapter of the South West Commodity Farmers Organisation.
Jokotoye noted that establishing a database of herders in the state will considerably boost security efforts, enhance livestock management, and aid in the resolution of possible conflicts.
She also stated that the state administration learnt that some private veterinary practitioners and veterinary pharmaceutical companies operate without necessary licensing.
She added that slaughter slabs, cattle markets, and live bird marketplaces operate unlawfully in Ogun State without the Department of Veterinary Services’ permissions and licenses.
Jokotoye advised that anyone who engages in these illegal actions must stop immediately or face legal repercussions under the Animal Disease Control Act of 2022.
She asked all parties involved to obtain the necessary papers and government registration in order to operate legally.
